What is SteelWorks® FedMobile?
SteelWorks® FedMobile is an enhanced version of SteelCloud’s integrated plug & play BlackBerry® Enterprise
Server (BES) appliance that was developed to conform to the DoD’s wireless STIG requirements. SteelCloud worked closely with Research
In Motion, the developer of BES, to create this unique appliance. SteelWorks® FedMobile simplifies the installation and support of the
BlackBerry® Enterprise Server. SteelCloud’s “BES in a box” appliance is the simplest most cost effective way to install and manage a DoD
STIG-compliant BlackBerry® environment.
What is included in the SteelWorks® FedMobile product?
SteelWorks® FedMobile combines a high performance server platform running MS Windows Server
OS with a full
version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. These components are fully integrated under SteelCloud’s Installation Assist program that can usually be
accomplished in under 60 minutes. Every SteelWorks® FedMobile appliance supports Microsoft®
Exchange.
Who was SteelWorks® FedMobile designed for?
SteelCloud developed SteelWorks® FedMobile for any organization that wants to reduce the cost, complexity, and
risk of implementing and supporting a STIG-compliant BlackBerry® Enterprise Server environment.
What STIG support is provided by SteelWorks® FedMobile?
The SteelWorks® FedMobile appliance (with its associated operating system) is
compliant with the DoD Wireless STIG BlackBerry® Security Checklist,
Windows Server OS Security
Checklist, and the .Net Framework security checklist. It is "Gold and Platinum Disk"
compliant in conjunction with normal site-specific set-up functions including loading of an anti-virus
program. The hundreds of security guidelines outlined by the Defense Information Security
Agency's (DISA) STIG requirements have been implemented in the SteelWorks® FedMobile. The
appliance enables a full STIG-compliant installation of a BlackBerry® environment in less than 60 minutes.
Is it expensive?
SteelWorks® FedMobile “BES is a Box” was designed from the ground up as the
highest quality, least-cost option for implementing and supporting the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server environment.
SteelCloud has productized thousands of hours of automation development to create a product that delivers dividends on your investment
the first day you own it. No risk of “shelfware” or being out of compliance with SteelWorks® FedMobile – your
BES will be operational in about 60 minutes.
What are the benefits of SteelWorks® FedMobile over buying BES software and server
hardware separately and installing the environment?
SteelWorks® FedMobile “BES in a Box” is more cost effective, faster, and significantly
reduces your STIG implementation risk. The BlackBerry® Enterprise Server is universally recognized as a unique piece of technology
having tremendous depth and breadth of functionality. Because BES tightly integrates with so many pieces of an organization’s IT
infrastructure, its installation is tedious and time consuming and requires a wide range of technical expertise. SteelCloud spent
the better part of two years studying how to improve the BES installation and support process. SteelWorks® FedMobile
“BES in a Box” markedly simplifies the complexity of BES implementation and support, while reducing time, risk, and the technical
staff requirements. In a DoD environment, BES installation is only a very small part of implementing a BlackBerry® environment that is
STIG-compliant. SteelCloud has implemented the applicable STIGs in SteelWorks® FedMobile thereby eliminating weeks of
highly technical security work.
What about software licensing?
With SteelWorks® FedMobile, your organization will receive a Microsoft®
Windows Server OS license
and a license to the SteelCloud’s Steelworks. Although a full version of BlackBerry® Enterprise Server is installed on the
appliance, licensing for BES and appropriate CALs are to be acquired separately. This flexible implementation allows your organization to
buy your BES licenses through your vendor and/or contracting vehicle of choice. And, your BES licenses remain portable between hardware
platforms. If you are already a BES customer, you can take advantage of SteelWorks® FedMobile while using your existing
BES licenses and become STIG compliant in 60 minutes.
What else do I need to buy?
SteelWorks® FedMobile is a complete BES appliance solution. Just add your BlackBerry
BES/CAL license keys and have a keyboard, monitor, and mouse available for set-up. Your organization’s anti-virus program will also have
to be installed on the appliance. And, of course, you will need some BlackBerry® smartphones!
What level technical resource(s) do I need to implement SteelWorks® FedMobile?
SteelWorks® FedMobile generally requires one resource for about 60 minutes.
SteelWorks® FedMobile reduces the steps necessary to implement BES in a STIG-compliant environment to an absolute minimum.
Instead of multiple specialized resources taking weeks to install BES and “harden” the environment, SteelWorks® FedMobile
can be installed by a single resource familiar with your organization’s environment in less than 60 minutes. SteelWorks® FedMobile is hardened and
STIG-compliant out of the box.
How does SteelWorks® FedMobile affect software support?
With SteelWorks® FedMobile, SteelCloud has not modified the standard products or implemented
any proprietary support procedures for Windows
Server OS or BES. Therefore, standard procedures for supporting Windows and BES have been
implemented in the SteelWorks® FedMobile appliance – nothing proprietary.
Who supports the product?
SteelCloud is available to support SteelWorks® FedMobile customers on issues relating to the
installation and support of the appliance. BlackBerry® Enterprise Server support is provided by RIM as with any standard BES product
or T-Support contract purchased through RIM.
How can SteelWorks® FedMobile enhance
my organization’s back-up and disaster recovery strategies?
SteelWorks® FedMobile will enhance the operation of your BlackBerry® environment from
day one. For many organizations, their BlackBerry environment is considered to be mission-critical. It is therefore recommended that
back-up and disaster recovery procedures be implemented as with other critical applications. SteelWorks® FedMobile is
functionally equivalent to a standard Windows-based server running BES, so your organization’s standard procedures can be implemented. Many
organizations will also choose to have a back-up BES server available for installation in case of hardware failure. Every
SteelWorks® FedMobile appliance has a highly standardized STIG-compliant implementation of Microsoft® Windows Server and
BES software. SteelWorks® FedMobile will greatly reduce the time and effort your organization spends to support a back-up
BES server environment. The appliance’s streamlined installation process will also reduce the time and effort necessary to put the back-up
appliance into operation. The functionality of SteelWorks® FedMobile means reduced BES down-time and higher quality of
service.
