Demoing the Joys of SteelCloud with Josh Utermohle

Josh Utermole has been a Sales Engineer at SteelCloud for over two years. He knows all the ins and outs of ConfigOS and loves showing the product off. But there’s another part of the job he likes just as much—the work/life balance.

Josh reminds us that the great joy of work is working to live—working to spend time doing what you love to do with whomever you love to do it with. It’s a concept that is built into the SteelCloud ethos. After all, the entire company exists to automate processes in order to give cybersecurity professionals more time to do the things that have meaning for them. Read on to see what fulfills Josh and how ConfigOS fits into the equation.

What does a Sales Engineer do at SteelCloud?Meet Josh Utermohle: Sales Engineer 1

I demo our software, ConfigOS, to potential customers and also customers that are looking to renew. I also build and maintain the demo environments, mainly in Azure. And then I travel for conferences and showcase our product there as well.

What’s the best part of your job?

I like to sell the product. I like telling people about the product. It’s something that I really do believe in and that makes it a lot easier to sell. And I enjoy seeing people’s reactions when they see the product in action. They’re just amazed about all of what the product can do, and I like seeing their excitement.  After people buy our product, I like hearing them say they’re getting what they paid for and more, especially with our white glove approach to customer service and all of the training and support that we give them.

Josh and his son, Keegan

Why do you like doing this at SteelCloud?

It’s what the job provides for me. It’s in being able to go home and feed my family and have the personal time to actually hang out with my son and do things with my family. The job really enables that for me and that’s what I find most important about any work that I do. I don’t want it taking time from my personal life and taking time away from my family. That the fulfilling part. I work at a company that cares a lot about that type of thing and provides the work/life balance to be able to do it.

As a Sales Engineer, what do you think SteelCloud does best in the industry?

The white glove support we provide for the customers is unreal and unheard of when it comes to software. So is the training. We are very adamant about jumping on every problem as soon as it happens and getting it resolved as fast as possible. Our software has a large footprint, but we are a smaller, more medium sized business. I think that’s why we are able to be so personal with our customers. We want to make sure our product is doing what you purchased it to do and we go above and beyond to make sure that’s the case.

What kind of an impact do you think SteelCloud has on the industry?

We automate manual processes. There are other programs that automate parts of the STIG or CIS Benchmarks process. But ConfigOS is a seamless, all-in-one product. We make the lives of our DoD and civilian customers easier so they can execute the missions that matter—expanding their IT footprints within their organizations, relieving the stress of the manual STIGging process and using CIS Benchmarks to secure their infrastructure.

When Josh isn’t demoing ConfigOS, he’s at home in Frederick, MD with his wife, Amanda, and his 11-year-old son Keegan. Right now, everyone is into ice skating with the possibility of Keegan becoming the next Wayne Gretsky. The family likes to watch TV and play Roblox together. They also like to play board games and card games and Burrito Throw. The work/life balance at SteelCloud allows Josh to pursue his real passion—family—and also gives him time to watch his favorite sci-fi show, Stargate SG-1.
