Simplifying STIG Compliance Across NIPR and University Environments with Automation
The dance of manual STIG compliance: Two steps forward, one step back
Hardening and maintaining a single environment to STIG requirements is already difficult, but one organization in the -Pacific region presented us with the need to manage both NIPR and University environments, adding another layer of complexity. Separate environments often come with distinct security requirements and policy decisions, effectively doubling the effort required to maintain compliance.
Across these disparate networks, the team needed to support:
- STIG hardening processes
- Authorization to Operate (ATO) requirements
- Risk Management Framework (RMF) / Cybersecurity Risk Management Construct (CSRMC) processes
- eMASS reporting
- Quarterly vulnerability scans
- Ongoing remediation efforts
- Continuous monitoring across separate networks
Like many organizations, they had assembled a collection of tools to help accomplish the job.
- EvaluateSTIG handled scanning in one environment.
- Microsoft Intune managed another.
- Group Policy Objects (GPOs) were heavily relied upon for remediation, and additional products were evaluated for server configuration.
The problem wasn’t that the tools didn’t work. The problem was that none of them worked together. And because they didn’t work together, they created more manual work in a two-steps-forward, one-step back kind of way. Each tool addressed one piece of the compliance lifecycle while leaving administrators to manually bridge the gaps between scanning, remediation, verification and reporting.
As the environment grew to nearly 500 Windows endpoints, 2/3 residing in NIPR and 1/3 in University, those gaps became increasingly difficult to manage across the two platforms.
A single solution that automates compliance across systems with separate requirements
After evaluating available options, the organization selected SteelCloud’s ConfigOS MPO unified solution, one that is purpose-built to scan, remediate, validate and report on STIG compliance from a single dashboard. It routinely removes 90% of the effort involved in STIG compliance and 70% of the time and cost.
While a new agent-based, highly customizable solution, ConfigOS was built on a SteelCloud solution that had been proven for more than a decade in the world’s most vulnerable environments. The organization became one of ConfigOS MPO’s first production implementations. The deployment included:
- 480 Windows workstations
- 27 Windows servers
- Separate ConfigOS policy workbenches supporting independent NIPR and University policy requirements
The implementation was also a milestone for SteelCloud by demonstrating how ConfigOS could support organizations with distinct operational and compliance requirements from a common management platform.
Rather than stitching together multiple standalone tools, the security team could now manage scanning, remediation, verification, reporting and continuous compliance from a single, fully integrated, unified solution.
What changes when compliance becomes continuous?
Today, the organization’s compliance process looks very different. Instead of relying on manual remediation and GPO-heavy workflows, unified automation performs much of the routine work required to maintain secure configurations.
Today, Risk Management Framework (RMF) documentation and eMASS reporting are easier to maintain. The team is better prepared for ATO renewals and security audits. Perhaps most importantly, cybersecurity personnel spend less time maintaining compliance and more time supporting the organization’s mission.
Operational improvements are evident:
- STIG hardening across Windows workstations and servers is now fully automated
- The organization’s NIPR and University compliance requirements are managed from a single solution
- RMF, ATO and eMASS readiness has improved
- The team no longer relies on manual remediation and Group Policy management
- More time is available for mission-focused cybersecurity operations
- Wasting time on broken applications and alert fatigue is a thing of the past
- The organization’s overall compliance posture is improved
Rather than returning to fragmented workflows or expanding manual processes, the team has built its compliance program around automation and continuous monitoring. It’s a different and far more gratifying daily routine.
Their experience reflects a broader trend across government and defense organizations: compliance automation is no longer just about reducing labor. It’s about creating repeatable, sustainable processes that keep pace with evolving security requirements, while allowing cybersecurity professionals to focus on defending the mission—not chasing configuration drift.
Over the years, ConfigOS has helped customers improve their audit success, achieve faster ATOs, establish and maintain continuous compliance, streamline their compliance efforts and avoid millions in compliance costs by adopting unified automation.
